"Hunger Games" Hairstyles Crafted by Charlotte Students

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One of the most talked about things in The Hunger Games movie is the style—the outlandish costumes and hairstyles.

Much of the work is thanks to hair students from the Charlotte area who received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

A hair blow dryer, flat iron and coloring equipment—these are the weapons of The Hunger Games. Well, at least the making of them.

“We were doing anything from braids, making wigs, dying wigs,” said Rex Faile.

Faile is a design team leader at The Paul Mitchell School in Gastonia. He and the other students and staff at the school, along with the one in Charlotte, spent last summer doing more than 700 hair pieces for the movie after Academy Award winning hair department head Linda Flowers called from Los Angeles looking for some extra hands.

Bryce Carey is another instructor.

“Everything in the capitol is really opulent, extravagant. We did a lot of outrageous colors, lime green, pink—incorporated into silver hair, white hair,” Carey said.

Lyle Wilson focused on the leading lady's braids.

“Having a daughter, having to do her hair coming up, I had that little bit of experience,” Wilson said.

It took 40 hairstylists and 20 interns to do 4,000 eyelashes, 2,000 fingernails and 700 hairpieces.

A special thrill for Wilson was getting to see star Jennifer Lawrence on set.

“Actually watching her, to see Katniss walk by with the braids, I’m thinking, ‘That’s my work,’” Wilson added.
